Guelph RONA not among those being shut down

The locally-owned Guelph RONA store is not among those being shut down by home improvement giant Lowe's Canada.

But the closing of 34 stores casts further shade onto the future of a proposed Lowe's store on Elmira Road.

Lowes has announced that 34 "underperforming stores" will be shut down in the near future. They include the RONA Home and Garden on Pinebush Road in Cambridge, which will be closed by the end of January.

Nine of the 34 stores being closed are in Ontario.

RONA said in it's announcement that the closures are necessary to "optimize its network."

“While making decisions that impact our associates and their families is never easy, closing underperforming stores is a necessary step in our plan to ensure the long-term stability and growth of our Canadian business,” said Tony Cioffi, Interim President of Lowe's Canada, in the release.

It is not known how many people will lose their jobs.

It's also not known what this will mean for any plans to build a new Lowe's store on Elmira Road.

The company first approached the city about building a store just south of Costco in 2014 and have purchased the land.

In 2015 Lowe's submitted an initial site plan with the city to build a store between 10,500 and 14,500 square feet located at 129 Elmira Road. S.

There is currently no develompent application for that address.
