While reports suggest the federal Green Party is going through some financial struggles, officials believe the same can’t be said for the provincial wing.
In a statement to GuelphToday, local MPP and Green Party of Ontario (GPO) leader Mike Schreiner’s press secretary says the party is likely to meet its fundraising goals.
"The GPO continues to be on track to run our largest campaign ever,” said Darren Elias in an email. “Last year we had a historic fundraising year and this year we are ahead of our fundraising target.”
“The provincial party is incredibly strong right now,” Schreiner added during a Friday morning news conference at Dolime Quarry, in response to a question about provincial party finances. “In June we had our best fundraising month ever.”
Numerous recent media reports indicate the Green Party of Canada is experiencing cash imbalances stemming from financial decisions made in 2019 and 2020 that could have an impact on the next election – something that could happen later this year.
These reports come as federal party executives reportedly made the decision Wednesday to block $250,000 in campaign funding for leader Annamie Paul and her planned run in the Toronto Centre riding. Staff layoffs also occurred within the federal party a week prior.
Schreiner also mentions a number of strong candidates have also expressed an interest in running for the party in the next election.
“The Green Party of Ontario is in great shape, so I would just say to the federal party, to reconcile your differences and get behind Annamie Paul, because I think she is a strong leader for the GPC and I think is a needed voice within Parliament Hill.”
