Downtown Guelph mural damaged in car accident

'Cultivation' was created by a Winnipeg-based Métis artist for the Main Street Mural Project in 2019

Downtown Guelph looks a little less colourful with the absence of a mural on Wilson Street.

On Thursday, city spokesperson Laura Mousseau confirmed that the mural was damaged in a car accident and was removed for safekeeping and repair. Now the space sits empty with just the mounts in place and the word 'art' spray painted in quotations.

The mural was created as part of the City’s Main Street Mural Project that launched exactly three years ago. The goal of the project was to liven up locations where art was installed.

The now damaged mural was created by Kenneth Lavallee, a Winnipeg-based Métis artist. Titled Cultivation, the piece of art depicted an abstract cornfield on the left and cycles of time on the right that symbolized traditional territories of the Attawandaron.

The Main Street Mural Project was entirely funded by Ontario’s Main Street Revitalization Initiative and the city received 202 submissions for part one of the project.
