Gregory Mungall truly loves his community and wholeheartedly dedicates himself to strengthening the bonds within it.

For almost 20 years, Mungall has been the co-owner and operator of Speed River Paddling (SRP) canoe and kayak rentals.

Since SRP’s humble beginnings, they have provided a unique, inclusive and accessible experience in the heart of Guelph, attracting visitors from across the region.

As Mungall states in the mission statement of SRP, he strives to be a leader in outdoor experiences in Guelph and the surrounding area through a combination of community care, environmental stewardship efforts and fostering a welcoming and safe outdoor space.

Mungall was beyond grateful when he heard the news of his Community Builders Award win.

“Winning this award feels like momentum towards what brings me joy and purpose in my life,” shared Mungall. “Being recognized for the programs and connections I have made in the last few years is a reminder that any small connection or act of kindness, though it may feel insignificant, can positively impact the lives of those around you.”

Mungall lends his personal time to instructing weekly pay-what-you-can paddling lessons, with all of the proceeds going to the local charities.

Clinics like this allow for a safe space for community members to learn a new skill and build relationships.

“My vision for the boat rental business has always been to be a platform for people to experience the outdoors in unique and exciting ways that are accessible to everyone,” shared Mungall.

Mungall’s commitment to his community is exemplified by his financial support to BIPOC Gear Library, The Guelph Food Bank, The Ward Night Market, The Grove Youth Hubs, Anishnabeg Outreach and cancer research.

Mungall shared, “I invite anyone in the community to connect with me, start a conversation and help develop new ways to connect more people with their community and the unique urban ecosystem in our own backyard.”

The Sports and Recreation Award is presented to an individual or group who has contributed to the strength of a sport in the community, by way of inspiring people, establishing a program, mentoring a team or individual to extraordinary accomplishments or setting an example for others to carry.

Congratulations, Gregory!

This award is proudly sponsored by Nick Fitzgibbon.
