The SEED is a project of the Guelph Community Health Centre, a do-it-together food movement that provides access to healthy food.
With over 20,000 people in the area who cannot afford nutritious groceries, The SEED is working to eradicate food insecurity by delivering specialized programs.
The SEED's programs include food literacy, access to food, operating social enterprises and training and employing youth to generate revenue that is then reinvested into the community.
“We have so many people to thank who share our vision of a community where everyone has the food they need to be well,” said Tom Armitage, manager at The SEED. “It starts with having a space shared with us that we’re then able to share with others.”
The Wood Development Group continues to support the organization by making its 30,000 square-foot warehouse available for receiving, storing and distributing food.
The group's most recent initiative is groceries from The SEED, the first pay-what-you-choose online grocery store and delivery service in Canada, with over a thousand members already.
They also offer a shared garden space, in partnership with Kindle at the Shelldale Farm Park, with over 70 raised garden beds for local residents.
“These spaces are not only filled with food but with people, volunteers who each week bring their wonderful, supportive and vibrant selves in support of a shared vision that can’t be thanked enough,” shared Armitage.
Armitage continues, “It’s an honour to have The Seed be recognized with the Community Builder Award in the Health Care category and we accept it on behalf of every volunteer, customer, participant and donor who has made The SEED what it is.”
The Health Care Award is presented to an individual or group that has had an important impact on the health care of the community.
Congratulations to the team at The SEED!
