Stu and Kim Lang are philanthropists who have been giving back to the Guelph community for decades, steadfastly supporting the causes closest to their hearts: The three As (athletics, academics, and animal welfare).
A longtime champion of the University of Guelph, Stu Lang is a member of Queen’s Football Hall of Fame and a five-time Grey Cup winner from his time playing football professionally in the Canadian Football League. After he hung up his helmet, he used his knowledge on the field to mentor up-and-coming athletes while coaching the University of Guelph Gryphons football team.
Serving as the head varsity football coach for six years, Lang’s team had the best winning percentage in the university's history, capturing the Yates Cup in 2015.
Kim Lang's passions are evident through her work on the OVC Pet Trust board and as the artistic director of the Eden Mills Writers’ Festival.
Outside of the impactful work done through the charity they established, the Angel Gabriel Foundation, the pair also works with the local Indigenous community to learn about the challenges they face and how to help address gaps in efforts to support these individuals.
The Langs have gifted millions of dollars to various institutions including Upper Canada College, Queen’s University, University of Guelph, Ontario Veterinary College, the Mona Campbell Centre for Animal Cancer and the Northern Animal Health Initiative.
The Lang’s Community Healthcare Partnership Program stands as Canada's pioneering academic initiative, dedicated to overcoming barriers to animal care.
“We feel very honoured to receive this,” shared Stu Lang. “Kim and I are very humble and shy individuals. We keep a small circle and we don’t expect recognition.”
“When you get involved in philanthropic activities you become part of that community, so you meet others that are very generous as well. It's nice to be recognized among that group,” Lang said.
These hardworking individuals are dedicated to supporting the new generation with program funding and scholarships while providing the tools they need to make Guelph great for years to come.
“As Guelphites, we feel committed to giving back to our community,” shared Lang.
“Thank you for recognizing the citizens of Guelph. When people get recognized, it encourages others to get involved in charitable efforts as well,” states Lang. “Go Gryphons!”
The Hall of Fame award goes to an individual or group with big ideas that have had a significant impact on the community.
