Dr. Joanne O’Meara is a pioneering educator who has worked tirelessly to find innovative ways to share her passion with people of all ages.
During her 20 years at the University of Guelph, she has created courses in physics, including the first-ever required science communication course in Canada.
Dr. O’Meara has worked with local, provincial and national organizations, including workshops for teachers, co-hosting STEM Week, editing a column called Science Corner and appearing on the Discovery Channel.
“This is an amazing surprise. I didn't know I’d been nominated,” Dr. O’Meara shared. “Getting this recognition and knowing that our work is appreciated is incredible.”
Building on Dr. O’Meara’s passion for sharing science with people of all ages, she co-founded the non-profit organization Royal City Science in 2020 with University of Guelph Physics colleague The Great Orbax.
“I want to say a huge thank you to the board that's been involved with Royal City Science. It's been a joy to work with them all,” shared Dr. O’Meara.
Dr. O’Meara’s dedication to improving the educational experience, both at the University of Guelph and throughout the community through the efforts of Royal City Science, is impressive.
She has been honoured previously with awards including 3M National Teaching Fellow in 2019, Favourite Professor in 2017, the John Bell Award in 2014 and the Canadian Association of Physicists Medal for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching in 2011.
She is an educator who is truly making a difference every day in the lives of learners in Guelph.
The Education award goes to a student, teacher, administrator, or education advocate who has made a difference in the city of Guelph. It could be an extraordinary teacher who has changed the direction of students’ lives, an administrator who established a specialized program, or an advocate who saved a school from closing.
