The campaign may have only lasted about a month, but it was a long slog for NDP candidate Cameron Spence, who said he’s looking forward to a little rest now that the contest is over.

“It's been a long campaign and my partner and I are pretty happy that it's over now,” he told GuelphToday. “I just feel a responsibility to continue what I've started and follow through with helping some of the groups that I've talked to.

“I'm looking forward to that, but at the same time I'm also looking forward to getting some sleep.”

Unofficially, Spence finished with 3,497 votes – enough for 5.82 per cent of the local tally.

This was the first election campaign for the 39-year-old who previously said he got involved in politics, in part, because he senses a lack of trust in government.

Despite the loss, he plans to continue working with local agencies to “organize and go after funding.”

He doesn’t expect this to make the end of his political endeavours.

The NDP candidate during the 2022 provincial election, James Parr, garnered 4,402 votes – 8.06 per cent of ballots cast. He finished fourth, behind Mike Schriener (54.45 per cent of votes), PCP’s Peter McSherry (20.41 per cent) and Rachelle Devereaux of the Liberals (13.29 per cent).
