MINTO — The Town of Minto’s new chief administrative officer, Derrick Thomson, said he’s happy to have a great new council and staff to work with.
The former City of Guelph CAO is in for a different challenge in Minto.
With a population of 9,000, is much different compared to Guelph but Thomson still sees the job the same way.
“It doesn’t matter what size city you’re in, you’re still responsible for the legislative part of our business,” Thomson said this week at a town council meeting. “Today we just approved a DC (development charges) bylaw, you have to do a DC bylaw in Guelph. The tasks are still the same.”
Thomson left his position as CAO with the City of Guelph last February after six years in various roles. He said he had great support from Guelph Mayor Cam Guthrie and other members of council.
“We mutually agreed that it was the right time to leave,” Thomson said. “I have nothing but wonderful things to say about the mayor and Guelph council.”
After taking time off with his family, he found the opportunity with the Town of Minto and decided it would be a good fit. He started with the town Jan. 22.
“I’m very honoured to be the CAO in Minto and being able to engage with council and the community,” Thomson said. “They have a great economic development team, so I’m very excited to be here.”
