Students have been evacuated from an elementary school in the northeast area of Guelph this morning following a phone threat.

The school is Waverley Drive Public School.

Guelph police are currently investigating a threat made against the school.

School staff notified police of the threat around 8:30 a.m. March 21. Police are on scene determining if the threat is credible, said Scott Tracey, police spokesperson. The police's tactical unit is on scene.

The Upper Grand District School Board sent out emails and phone messages to parents this morning.

The first message, sent out at 9: 20 a.m., included: "Early this morning, we received an alleged threat against the school via phone call. We immediately contacted Guelph Police. Police are at the school and are currently investigating the situation out of an abundance of caution.

"Students are safe and are with staff at a neighbouring school, École élémentaire L'Odyssée.

"The safety of our students and staff is our primary concern. While we currently do not believe this is a credible threat, police are thoroughly investigating as they take the safety of our students and school community very seriously as well. "

The second message and email told parents who were able to come to L'Odyssée to pick up their children that they were welcome to do so.

More to come.
