A Guelph man faces charges after at least 18 downtown businesses had their telephone and internet cables cut last week.

Last Wednesday morning, at least 13 businesses on Wyndham Street North reported their external cables damaged, affecting their ability to conduct business. It is believed the damage occurred approximately 5:30 a.m. Wednesday.

On Friday morning, five more businesses on Quebec Street and Norfolk Street reported similar damage done overnight. The total damage is still unknown but is estimated to be in excess of $5,000.

Police reviewed footage from new downtown cameras and identified a person of interest. After his photo was shared with the public on Friday, a resident recognized the male and called police, leading to the arrest. He was found to be in possession of wire cutters.

A 32-year-old Guelph man is charged with mischief over $5,000.
