One man is dead and a woman was rushed to a Hamilton hospital following a house fire this morning in the city's west end.
The 911 call came in shortly before 7 a.m. for a fire at 12 Sunset Rd., unit C3 – a townhouse complex located off Applewood Crescent right behind Willow West Mall.
Police spokesperson Scott Tracey said there were four adults in the house at the time, two upstairs and two in the basement. A 41-year-old man in the basement died and a woman also in the basement was rescued and rushed to a hospital in Hamilton. The two people upstairs were uninjured.
"The 911 call came in at 6:58 a.m.about a house fire. There were four people in the house, two upstairs and two living in the basement. The two living upstairs were able to get out with minor smoke inhalation," Tracey said.
"They did try to get the people in the basement out, but weren't able to. When firefighters got on scene they removed two people from the basement, a male and a female. The male has unfortunately passed away."
He said it was the people living upstairs that called 911.
The basement was not a walk-out basement.
There was no immediate cause of the fire known.
Tracey did not know if the home was equipped with smoke alarms.
Next of kin of the deceased person had been notified, he said.
"No cause known yet. Police will be assisting the fire department and I suspect the Ontario Fire Marshall's office with the investigation," Tracey said, "but at this point we don't know the cause or even where it started."
A dog also escaped the fire. After some treatment by firefighters, it was taken by the Guelph Humane Society.
