According to the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, our bone density reaches its peak by age 40. People in their 40s may notice a decrease in bone density, and this is especially the case for women, who experience more rapid and a higher percentage of bone loss as they age.
Osteopath Karen Barker was one of those women in danger of low bone density after she received the results from her annual visit to her doctor. Barker discovered she had osteopenia, which put her at risk for developing osteoporosis.
High-intensity strength training can improve bone density
Some options on the table for Barker were medication, a change in diet, or adding some strength training to her routine to help build some muscle and increase her bone strength. Barker opted for the latter, and she’s since taken her health into her own hands.
After trying several gyms, Barker chose Circuit 33 Fitness Studio in Guelph. She liked it wasn’t an intimidating atmosphere, that the class sizes were small, and she found the instructors supportive of her specific fitness goals.
Circuit 33 differs from most gyms because it has a maximum of 75 members at one time. They limit circuit sessions to three members per floor, workouts are 33 minutes long, and members have three sessions per week. It’s a simple 99-minute workout commitment per week.
Almost 12 months since joining Circuit 33, Barker says she plans her day around her workout and has experienced a considerable change in her energy levels and her overall strength level.
“My energy has changed, especially when I work out in the morning,” Barker said. “Usually by 4:00 pm, I’m yawning, but not anymore. Clients have noticed. They’ve asked: ‘Are you working out?’ I noticed the definition of my muscle tone has increased.”

As someone who has been practicing osteopathy for 35 years, she’s seen plenty of instances where clients have come to her after suffering their own injury in the gym. That’s why Barker wanted to join a gym where they guided her through the workout and showed her how to use any equipment properly.

“My goal was I was going to do this for a year, see how it goes, do my bone density test, and if it’s improved, that’s great,” Barker said. “But I realized at 62, if I stop, my muscles are not going to be maintained. I think I’m hooked here for life. So long as Circuit 33 is open, I’m going to be here.”
