A Guelph man faces several charges after another man was allegedly detained in a downtown apartment, assaulted with a machete and threatened, say Guelph police.

On Tuesday the victim reported the incident, which happened Feb. 26. That day he was confronted downtown by another man over an outstanding debt and taken to an apartment, where he was struck in the face and had a machete held to his throat. He was also cut on the leg with the weapon.

The victim did not report the incident at the time, but came forward after receiving a threatening phone call from the other man on Tuesday.

A 23-year-old man was arrested downtown early Wednesday morning. He resisted arrest and at the police station kicked an officer in the leg.

He is charged with several assault, weapons and threatening charges and was held for a bail hearing Wednesday.
