A Guelph man faces charges after assaulting a police officer while in custody Wednesday afternoon.

Just after 9:30 a.m. officers patrolling downtown observed a male known to be wanted for failing to appear in court on charges including theft and breaching a release order. He was placed under arrest and transported to the police station to be held for a bail hearing.

While at the station he was being escorted to a cell when he spat on two computer screens used to monitor activities in the cell area. He also grabbed food which had been provided for lunch and threw it at an officer, striking her in the midsection.

A 41-year-old Guelph man is charged with assault police, mischief under $5,000 and failing to attend court. He was held for a bail hearing Thursday.
