One of Guelph’s oldest buildings should be getting a new tenant soon.
The Wellington Hotel building, technically 147 Wyndham St. N., will likely be home to a wood oven pizza restaurant that seats between 100 and 132 people.
The historic property, at the top of Wyndham where it meets Woolwich Street, has been leased to Piatto, a wood-oven pizza and Italian food restaurant chain.
Piatto Neapolitan Pizza Inc., which advertises as “authentic Neapolitan wood-fired pizza,” has three locations in the Maritimes and recently opened one in Cambridge.
In addition to wood oven pizza they serve desserts, antipasto and pasta dishes.
The company has applied to the city’s Committee of Adjustment for a minor variance to allow for an increase in the floor size of a licenced establishment at that location by roughly 20 per cent from what is currently allowed. The application will be heard Sept. 26.
The building is currently zoned ‘Special Downtown Zone’ which says a licenced establishment can not have a larger floor area than up to 230 square metres. The applicant wants an amendment that allows up to 270 square metres.
