When you own a commercial space, an industrial workspace or an institutional environment, there is no margin for error in any project. Expansions and renovations must adhere to strict guidelines. You must provide a safe and clean environment for customers, employees and visitors.

It’s no wonder why many local businesses trust Guelph-based Encore Poly-Floor for professional grade floor coatings, as well as commercial, industrial and institutional painting projects.

Matthew Kwantes is the owner, and his company’s roots go back to 1966 as Encore Decorating, a local painting business. In the years since, they’ve expanded to offer epoxy floor painting services for residential and commercial clients.

The process of preparing and painting a garage floor and an industrial floor are quite similar, but instead of a vinyl flake providing traction in the topcoat, Encore Poly-Floor adds a silica sand to the final step of the process to provide a safe surface, like in a commercial kitchen.

The key is preparing the concrete surface for the epoxy, and Kwantes and his team start by grinding the surface and then repairing any deficiencies in the concrete before applying the layer of epoxy. It’s a critical part of ensuring the coating has a long lifespan in a factory, warehouse or commercial space.

“There is a little more attention to detail in the preparation because we don’t have a texture hiding any sin that may lie beneath,” Kwantes said. “The preparation needs to be pristine because it’s going to be a gloss finish over a large surface.”

If concrete is under foot, choosing an epoxy floor solution is far more cost effective than any other flooring option in a commercial or industrial space. The speed at which they can finish the job is another appealing aspect, which limits downtime for clients.

As sizes of facilities vary, Encore Poly-Floor works with each individual customer to develop a game plan to figure out what’s the most efficient way of applying the epoxy floor coating, or any additional painting requests.

Kwantes took over the company at age 25 when his father John retired from the painting business, but the values that were established back in the 1960s still apply to this very day. The attention to detail is unparalleled, and that’s something which keeps Encore Poly-Floor and Encore Decorating a revered and trusted name in the painting and coatings industry.

“I think it’s the quality of work, and it’s also the honesty that I will have with the customer,” Kwantes said. “I’m fair, I’m honest, and I do quality work. My motto is always be honest, do your best, and treat it like it’s your own property. It had to have worked because that was my dad’s signature as well, and that was 58 years ago.”
