WELLINGTON COUNTY – The proposed cost of Wellington County’s 2024 policing contract is up 1.5 per cent over last year as the Wellington OPP consider a new civilian media position.
A budget report going forward to the county’s police services board estimates a cost of nearly $17.9 million for the service in 2024, up 1.5 per cent over the previous year.
This budget also includes the cost of the police services board, administration of parking tickets and false alarm, the cost of county-owned facilities and annual grants to Safe Communities and Project Lifesaver.
The report also notes a recommended new media relations coordinator, a civilian position with an April 2024 start date. Currently the position is filled by an OPP officer.
“Due to the moratorium on new uniform officer hiring while the OPP is working on a new service delivery model, it is recommended that the funds earmarked for one uniformed officer in 2024 be redirected to a new civilian media position,” the report stated. “The new media relations coordinator is expected to cost just under $107,000 in the 2024 budget.”
This budget request will be considered by the police services board at a meeting 9 a.m. on Wednesday at the Wellington County Administration Centre.
