A man is in hospital with "significant burn injuries" after the fire at a home in the east end of Guelph.
Fire crews arrived to 61 Brant Ave. just before 5 p.m. Sunday, fire officials report.
"The house was fully involved at the time of our arrival," deputy fire chief Ryan Schubert told GuelphToday.
He said 26 staff initially responded to the blaze at the one-storey brick bungalow home.
Crews were able to extinguish the main fire, but there was still smoke coming out of the roof and basement 90 minutes later.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, and it's not known if it's being considered suspicious. Local fire investigators were on scene Monday morning, and the Ontario Fire Marshal's office will also be involved.
"There's no damage estimate available at this time, as we're in the midst of a fire scene investigation," Schubert said. "That will come much later after the on scene portion of the investigation is complete."
Schubert said that while the investigation is ongoing, there were reports from neighbours of an explosion coming from in the house prior to the arrival of the fire department.
Schubert wasn't able to confirm the number of people or pets living inside the home, but did say the home is not inhabitable at this point.
On Sunday, a bystander said a man was seen leaving the home under his own power, but added he left in an ambulance.
