Stovetop fire prompts partial evacuation of downtown building

'It was a small fire but it produced a lot of smoke,' says police spokesperson of Sunday incident on Carden Street

Some residents of a downtown building were evacuated early Sunday evening after a stovetop fire broke out.

Firefighters were called to a Carden Street building at about 4:40 p.m.

"It was a small fire but it produced a lot of smoke," explained Scott Tracey, Guelph police spokesperson, noting police were called in to assist with traffic control.

The fire was quickly extinguished, Tracy said, adding the cause is considered accidental.

There were no reported injuries.
