An Ontario judge faces a pair of assault charges to be heard in Guelph

Paul Currie, senior justice of the province’s central west region, which includes Guelph, has been charged with assault and assault causing bodily harm.

He “will not be assigned any judicial or administrative duties until further notice,” states a notice to the profession and public posted Friday on the Ontario Court of Justice website.

“No further information or comment about this matter will be provided at this time,” the post notes.

Currie is next scheduled to appear in court in Guelph on May 23 for a case management conference.

Details about the alleged offences aren't publicly known at this time, including where they're reported to have taken place. None of the allegations have been proven.

Currie was appointed regional senior regional justice for the central west region in August of 2019.

The brief biography included in that announcement post indicates Currie began his legal career as an assistant Crown attorney who moved into private practice. He was appointed to be a judge in Brampton in 2004 and has had been the local administrative judge there between 2015 and 2019.
