THEMUSEUM unveils ‘GIRAFFE | A Heightened Experience’

New exhibition celebrates Dr. Anne Innis Dagg’s pioneering giraffe research, blending interactive technology with a profound conservation message.

THEMUSEUM in Waterloo Region has launched a captivating new exhibition, GIRAFFE | A Heightened Experience, dedicated to the lifetime achievements of pioneering Canadian zoologist Dr. Anne Innis Dagg.

Known for her groundbreaking research on giraffes, Dr. Dagg was the first Western scientist to study these majestic creatures in the wild, beginning her journey in South Africa during the 1950s.

The exhibition offers an intimate look at Dr. Dagg’s storied career and her significant contributions to zoology.

"This exhibition has something for everyone, from interactive exhibits to immersive displays," said Laurel McKellar, Senior Director of Exhibitions and Programming at THEMUSEUM.

"Visitors can explore Dr. Dagg's personal artifacts, original video footage, and even slide into a ‘watering hole’ ball pit designed to mimic a giraffe's environment."

Interactive and immersive experiences

The exhibition not only showcases historical artifacts and footage but also integrates modern technology to enhance visitor engagement.

"Through virtual reality experiences and interactive elements like ‘Walk like a Giraffe’ and ‘Animal Sound Quiz,’ visitors gain a deeper understanding of giraffe anatomy, behaviour, and their environment," McKellar explained.

Ana Carolina Esteves Dias's wildlife photography complements the exhibition, offering a contemporary look at giraffe research and conservation efforts. These visuals are presented alongside Dr. Dagg's original footage, creating a rich tapestry of historical and modern narratives.

A mission of conservation and education

The Anne Innis Dagg Foundation, established in 2020, underscores the exhibition's message by promoting the coexistence of humans and wildlife through education and conservation.

The foundation supports diverse science and education initiatives across the globe, reflecting Dr. Dagg's lifelong commitment to environmental stewardship and animal rights.

An inspirational journey

Visitors to the GIRAFFE exhibition are invited to immerse themselves in Dr. Dagg’s world.

"We hope guests leave inspired by Dr. Dagg’s dedication as a giraffologist, educator, and feminist," said McKellar. "Her story is not just about scientific exploration but also about overcoming adversity and making a lasting impact on both human and animal lives."

GIRAFFE: A Heightened Experience is open to the public until Jan. 5. It provides a unique educational experience that celebrates the legacy of a remarkable scientist and the gentle giants she devoted her life to studying.
