Poppy map shows Guelph veterans honoured with street names

To date there are 151 streets in the city that have been named in honour of veterans

If you have ever seen a street sign with a white background, blue lettering and a red poppy to the left of the street’s name in Guelph, you may have wondered if it was named after a veteran.

The City of Guelph has released an online map with poppies indicating the streets named after Guelph veterans. By clicking on a poppy it gives a description of the Guelph veteran and sometimes includes a photo of the person, their gravestone or a news clipping.

The street naming program started in 2012 and to date, 151 streets in the city have been named in honour of veterans.

It also means “75 per cent of new street names in Guelph are named after veterans, including citizens who made a significant contribution to the city and the city employees who died while in the service of our city,” said on the City of Guelph website.
