One section of York Road to reopen next month, another to close

Roadway expected to be ready for regular traffic by the end of the year ... until phase four arrives

Work crews are finishing up reconstruction efforts on one section of York Road and are set to move onto the next early in October.

“York Road is expected to be opened by the end of December,” states a post on the city’s website. “Minor surface works may continue once the road is opened.”

Currently, the road is closed between Brockville and Audrey avenues to allow for the replacement of underground infrastructure, followed by the replacement of curbs and sidewalks.

That work’s been underway since April and, as the post notes, is expected to wrap up on or about Oct. 7.

At that time the closure moves to between Audrey and Victoria Street South for an extension of the same work.

“York Road will remain closed to through traffic within the work site. Access will be maintained as best as possible for area residents during construction,” city officials wrote. “All local businesses in the area are open during construction.”

This work marks the end of phase three of the York Road reconstruction project, which got underway in 2017

Phase 4, from Victoria to the city’s eastern boundary, was previously expected to be completed in 2028, but that’s been pushed back to 2031. The scope of work involved in that phase was downsized during the 2024 to 2027 city budget process; it was among numerous altered or postponed projects that led to the removal of $693.7 million from the multi-year spending plan.

That section had been set for widening from two lanes to four, but will remain as two lanes.
