No injuries in fire that caused plume of black smoke Monday night

Fire happened at an encampment site near the Hanlon Expressway Monday evening

Police say no one was injured in a fire at an encampment site Monday evening which created a plume of thick black smoke that was visible on the other side of the city.

The fire was reported in an area between Silvercreek Parkway and the Hanlon Expressway, behind the plaza with Food Basics near Speedvale Avenue, shortly before 7 p.m.

No one is believed to have been at the site when the fire began, said Guelph police spokesperson Scott Tracey, who said the cause was accidental.

The fire was quickly extinguished, he noted.
