Two-way all-day GO train service through Guelph has taken another step forward.
Metrolinx has confirmed construction of a second platform at Guelph Central Station has been completed.
A spokesperson said the new south platform – which took just over a year to build – will not be open to commuters "until the south track is constructed in the future."
"Customers can still use the existing tunnel from the south parking lot to get to the north platform," the spokesperson added in an email to GuelphToday.
Metrolinx said in a news release that a 2.6 km passing track near Breslau is done, as is a storage track for maintenance vehicles near Speedvale Avenue West.
The next phase involves the extension of the north platform at Guelph Central, along with the installation of a passing track.
A package is slated to out to construction companies to determine who will do the work.
No firm timeline has been given by the province on when two-way all-day GO train service will operate between Guelph and Toronto.
In February, a statement from transport minister Prabmeet Sarkaria said the province will introduce the service along “core segments” of the GO transit rail network by 2031.
