An Elora man charged with criminal negligence causing death was denied bail in a Guelph courtroom Thursday.

Torry Harris, 32, is also charged with four counts of trafficking a controlled substance after being arrested by Wellington County OPP on April 5, in relation to the death of Joslyn Nellis, a 23-year-old Elora woman.

On April 3 police responded to a residence on Colquhoun Street in Fergus for a call regarding a female in medical distress.

Nellis, a popular waitress at Guelph's Airpark Cafe, was transported to hospital where she was later pronounced dead.

Harris, tall, slim with a scruffy beard and mustaches, wore jeans and a hoodie as he sat passively in the prisoner's box following the proceedings at the Ontario Court of Justice on Wyndham Street.

Justice of the Peace Walter Rojek heard submissions from Crown attorney Andre Rajna and defence council Cooper Lord before delivering his decision that Harris would remain in custody.

Members of Nellis family and members of Harris's family were in the courtroom for the roughly three-hour proceeding. A woman could be heard crying on several occasions.

There is a publication ban on the details of the hearing.

Harris will make his next appearance on April 29 by video.
