Guelph city councillor Dominique O'Rourke will be the Liberal party's candidate in the next federal election.
The Liberal Party of Canada's national campaign office sent out a notice late Tuesday afternoon saying O'Rourke had been acclaimed as the candidate.
She is currently serving her second term as councillor representing south Guelph's Ward 6.
Liberal MP Lloyd Longfield is retiring at the conclusion of his third term in office.
Liberals have won the Guelph federal riding in 10 consecutive elections. The last non-Liberal to win was Bill Winegard in 1988.
O'Rourke announced last December that she would be seeking the nomination.
"We are pleased to share that Dominique O'Rourke has been acclaimed as the Liberal Candidate for Guelph in the next federal election and will continue building on our hard work to keep Canada moving forward," said the news release.
"As we look forward to the important work ahead of us, the hope and hard work of Liberals across Canada will ensure our candidates and teams are ready to run competitive campaigns and earn another mandate from Canadians – including right here in Guelph."
The next federal election will be on or before Oct. 25, 2025.
