KITCHENER – The next step for Highway 7 between Guelph and Kitchener is nearly underway.

The construction of the Frederick Street bridge in Kitchener is being advanced by the province and will go out for tender shortly. This is another step to widen Highway 7. The four-lane, 18-km highway will aim to save commuters time in Kitchener, Waterloo and Guelph.

“The construction of a new Highway 7 will make life much easier for thousands of daily commuters in our community. Our government is committed to reducing gridlock and commute times and this investment will go a long way toward achieving that goal,” said Brian Riddell, MPP for Cambridge, in a press release.

On Feb. 28 contractors can submit proposals for the replacement of the Frederick Street bridge. The bridge will be lengthened to help traffic flow in both directions and so it can accommodate the widening of Highway 7 in the future.

The bridge replacement is part of the third phase of the new Highway 7.

“The replacement of the Frederick Street bridge is a significant step towards the completion of a new Highway 7. I am thankful for the provincial government's continued action on this much-needed connection between Kitchener and Guelph. With our fast-growing communities, this transportation infrastructure is critical to the prosperity of our region and the province of Ontario,” said Scott Davey, City of Kitchener councillor, in the release.

When the highway is finished being constructed it will have seven interchanges between Guelph and Kitchener.
