The city is taking some emergency measures to help improve its occasionally struggling summer bus service.

The city's Public Services Committee approved a motion Wednesday that will see approximately $75,000 spent to add "helper" busses on six or seven key routes that are having trouble maintaining the new 30 minute summer service.

"We know the a.m. and p.m. service on certain routes are experiencing difficulties," said Guelph Transit manager Phil Meagher at Wednesday's committee meeting.

"We want to get people to Guelph Central Station in time to make connections," Meagher said.

Construction on routes has been one of the main reasons the busses are having trouble staying on schedule and making sure people make their transfers, Meagher said.

The route issues seem to vary, depending on where that construction is going on.

Guelph Transit had already been looking at what it could do to help solve the problem and had a plan in place.

Culture and Tourism Manager Colleen Clack, who is helping manage public services with the recent promotion of Deputy CAO Derrick Thomson, said that if Guelph City Council as a whole approves of the plan at its June 27 meeting the additional busses could be activated in a week.

"We know there has been a problem and we know it's been challenging for people," said Deputy Chief Administrative Officer Mark Amorosi. "The city has a customer service issue."

Amorosi reminded the committee that the $75,000 to help solve the problem is not in the current budget.
