Preserving a legacy black walnut tree in Woodlawn Memorial Park will be the focus of an event hosted by the Guelph Tree Trust.

Woodlawn Memorial Park has over a thousand trees, but one tree in particular that dates back centuries is the focus of an event being held by the Guelph Tree Trust.

The event runs Saturday near a black walnut tree they're looking to preserve.

Officials said the family-friendly event begins at 9:15 a.m. and is sponsored by the Rotary Club of Guelph South.

Guelph MPP Mike Schreiner will speak, and Doug Steel of Full Circle Tree Care will lead arborists to perform pruning work on the legacy tree, which Woodlawn said may be as old as the cemetery, dating back to 1854.

"This care will extend the life of this tree and keep it sequestering carbon and providing environmental services for many more years," Sue Rietschin of the Guelph Tree Trust said in an email.

On top of preserving this tree, the non-profit said there will be a planting of saplings at 9:45 a.m. and a tree tour in the cemetery at 10:15 a.m.
