What's The Story About Town and Country LP?

Elliott BROOD's latest project, Town and Country, is a two-part album cycle that captures the essence of the band’s journey—both literal and emotional. Town, the first installment (released in 2023), dove into the band’s personal experiences of being away, missing loved ones, and confronting the mistakes and compromises that come with life on the road. "At its heart, Town is a reflection on the people we’ve become and the homes we’ve built wherever we are, with a sense of familiarity and connection that comes from two decades of traveling and performing across the country," the band shares.

The second half of the cycle, Country (released in 2024), is a vibrant and diverse companion piece to Town. The songs on Country have an energy with a wide-ranging spirit that is all their own. As a whole, Country works in a similar layered fashion, filtering decades of influences and experiences through Elliott BROOD’s road-tested lens.

Throughout Town and Country, several standout singles showcase the band’s storytelling prowess. “Wind and Snow” is a driving love song inspired by Casey Laforet’s personal migration from Canada to the West Coast of the U.S., capturing the beauty and diversity of the landscapes and people he encountered along the way. "Sinking Stone" is a quiet little hopeful number that Mark Sasso wrote within the first week of COVID when everything was shutting down. "Stars Align," carrying a 1960s feel, is inspired by Michelle Goode's novel Five Little Indians, with the book's themes informing the song’s direction. “Rose City” serves as a love letter to Windsor, Ontario, where Mark and Casey grew up, blending sentimental reflections with an upbeat, party-like vibe.

The Town and Country album cycle, twinned as one, offers a poignant and playful survey of the lay of the land as Elliott BROOD travels it.

What's The Story About Elliott BROOD?

Doing it the hard way for 20 years,” is a badge Elliott BROOD wear with honour. Two decades on, work, life and love have taken the trio in many directions, away from their hometowns and headfirst into an ongoing musical journey through distance and time. Now, after being members of this band for nearly half of their lives, Elliott BROOD is never more at home than in the wash of distorted, evocative strings and stomps that make their signature alt country sound.

Elliott BROOD appeared on the cover of Exclaim Magazine in 2008 as the new ambassadors of a roots, folk rock and alt country wave that flourished in Toronto’s early aughts. Elliott BROOD’s arrival came with a level of buzz that launched them directly into the heart of a vibrant Toronto scene that centered at label Six Shooter Records, where they have returned to release their newest music. Their live show, a maelstrom of frenetic energy and fuzz, has brought them back and forth across continents countless times on bills with The Sadies, Wilco, The Dead South, and many more. Their albums, meticulously crafted, detail-packed collections have brought some of Canada’s highest musical honours and awards, including a Polaris Music Prize Short List and a JUNO Award.

In their twenty years, the band has remained fiercely loyal to their mysterious namesake. The stylized, imaginary character has guided the band’s travels over mountains and meadows, and through the more harrowing sides of history. Elliott BROOD has grown into a vessel for the trio’s shared history too, with new songs finding connection and communion in themes that hit much closer to home. With smile lines and guitar fingers long hardened with callouses, Elliott BROOD has been doing it the hard way, but making it sound easy.

Elliott BROOD is:
Mark Sasso: Guitar, Banjitar, Lead Vocals
Stephen Pitkin: Drums, Percussion, BG Vocals
Casey Laforet: Guitar, Bass, Lead Vocals
