Guelph’s popular duck race fundraiser has been a Canada Day tradition for 15 years. Although the ducks won’t bob towards a finish line before an eager Canada Day crowd along the Speed River this year, they’ll race nevertheless—they’ll just do it online.

Tickets for Got Duck Digital 2020 will go on sale later this month, according to event organizers with the Rotary Club of Guelph-Wellington. They will cost $10/each, 6 for $50 or 14 for $100.

The grand prize is a $5,000 shopping spree in Downtown Guelph. Nine secondary prizes have also been donated and include electronics, $500 gift cards, a tool package, beer fridges and a chance to test drive an exotic car. There will be two early bird prizes, and the “duck race” finale will be on Thanksgiving weekend

“The duck races have raised more than $250,000 to support local charities. This has been an important fundraising project for our club, and for our community, and we know that now more than ever, they will continue to need our donations,” said organizer Richard Ritsema. The net proceeds will support community relief and recovery efforts related to COVID-19.

Ritsema says the club discussed how to keep the event alive this year and settled on online ticket sales to replace traditional person-to-person sales at events, malls and the Canada Day festivities. Local marketing agency The Letter M agreed to donate design and marketing services to promote the new format and encourage ticket sales.

We’re grateful to all our sponsors and prize donors for standing behind us in this new format,” said Ritsema. “With their support, we have made it very easy for people to get their duck tickets again this year.”

Ticket sales at gotduck.ca will launch by July 31.
