Council OKs lease extensions for city-owned tennis dome and music centre

Tennis club's rent to rise, while music centre and navy club continue rent-free

A trio of not-for-profit groups can continue using city-owned facilities for years to come. City council approved a series of lease extensions on Tuesday evening.

One makes it so  Royal City Tennis Club is able to use the city’s Municipal Street tennis dome and courts through the end of June, 2044. Its previous 30-year lease expired at the end of June.

Two others, both for 10-year periods, will see Guelph Youth Music Centre and Navy League’s Guelph branch continue to share space at 75 Cardigan St.

During the last five years of its previous lease, the tennis club paid $750 per month in rent, notes a city staff report

Under the new lease, that’s set to rise to $1,500 per month for the first five years, followed by $1,750 the second five years, $2,000 per month in years 11 through 15, and $2,250 per month in its final five years.

Both the music centre and navy club will continue to operate rent-free.
