A drone is set to fly Thursday, weather permitting, to collect information about a potential railway overpass or underpass on Edinburgh Road.

A drone is set to fly over part of the city on Thursday as officials look to collect information about the Edinburgh Road rail crossing.

The flying device will  gather topographical data along Edinburgh Road South, from Robinson Avenue and Crimea Street to Allan Avenue. City officials are considering the installation of an under or overpass in that area.

“The study will help determine if grade separation between the road and railway should be considered, and evaluate potential alternatives for addressing safety and traffic considerations,” states a post on the city’s website. ”No private information will be collected. The data will provide information about the ground’s physical features only.”

In a 2022 report, consults for the city recommended an environmental assessment be conducted to look at options for improving traffic flow along Edinburgh as part of Metrolinx’s plan to establish all-day, two-way GO train service between Toronto and Kitchener, through Guelph.

That assessment is to look at traffic volumes and speeds, as well as the costs and potential impacts of various options.

Those options are expected to be presented to city council for consideration later this year or next.
