Rules around the use of fireworks may soon change in Guelph. City officials are working on potential changes to the city’s bylaw regulating where fireworks can be set off, and for what occasions.

“We want to know if and how residents use fireworks to celebrate, and if there are specific dates and events that should be considered for firework sales and use, or if their use should be prohibited or restricted,” states a post on the city’s website.

“The feedback from the public will help us determine whether we should recommend a change to the current bylaw to council.”

At the moment, fireworks are allowed on private property only, with their use limited to a day on either side of Victoria Day and Canada Day, as well as Diwali. Beyond that, they can only be used with approval from the fire department or the fire chief specifically.

As part of a bylaw review, city officials are asking residents to take an online survey which runs through June 2 and/or attend organized presentations.

The first presentation will be offered virtually on May 15, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. An in-person presentation is set for May 30 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the Lion Liar room at the West End Community Centre.

Among other things, the survey asks residents if they consider fireworks too loud, harmful to the environment, exciting, fun, creates community togetherness etc. It also draws differences between private fireworks use and displays put on by hired professionals.

Differences between ground-based fireworks and those shot into the sky are also raised, as well as the use of sparklers, including on birthday cakes.

“While fireworks can be a fun and exciting way to celebrate milestones and events, there are safety, environmental, property damage and disruption considerations to be made,” states the post. “Our team is trying to find the right balance for Guelph.”
