On Friday, Dec. 8, a candlelight vigil was held at Royal City Park, as part of a cross-country campaign called Candles for COP28 coordinated by For the Love of Creation, a Canadian faith-based initiative for climate justice. As world leaders meet in Dubai at COP28, For the Love of Creation invited groups across Canada to host candlelight vigils in their own communities on the weekend of Dec. 8-10 to reflect and share our love for our planet, and our concern for ourselves, humanity and all our non-human relations at risk from climate change. Decisions made at COP28 can either exacerbate or alleviate climate injustice – these vigils were a stepping stone for connection, community, and furthered other advocacy efforts (education, letter-writing to elected leaders, media amplification and awareness). The vigil in Guelph was organized by Pamela Girardi, Manna Lead Coordinator and Community Engagement Animator at Harcourt Memorial United Church; Reverend John Lawson, Minister at the United Church of Canada; and Conor Russell, COP28 Support with the United Church of Canada.

“Fear, anger, sadness… these may bring us to the table of Climate Justice, but they’re not sustainable fuel. Hope, connection, seeing people in community doing good work - these are what keep us going.” – Conor Russell
