MAPLETON – Local hunters who want to hunt using a gun seven days a week could soon have a new option a little closer to home.

Referring to a report by former CAO Brad McRoberts from 2016, a new staff report to be voted on at a Mapleton council meeting next Tuesday recommends councillors approve using a gun to hunt on Sundays but gives no reason why.

This follows a motion from Coun. Marlene Ottens during a council meeting last month that asked staff to investigate the feasibility of permitting Sunday gun hunting after a resident's delegation.

Those in support of the recommendation include Brian McRae, Director of Government Affairs in Canada for duck hunting organization Delta Waterfowl.

"Sundays are not the day they used to be. For many Ontarians, Sunday is no different than any other day of the week," said McRae, in a letter to council. "Permitting Sunday gun hunting will essentially double the hunting opportunities for the Monday to Friday workforce, students, and families."

Hunting with a gun is not currently permitted on Sundays in Centre Wellington, Erin, Puslinch and Mapleton. Minto approved it in February.
