The summer sun is a welcome sight, but not when it coincides with a failing air conditioner.  I sat down with Rob Bezaire, General Manager of Oosterveld Heating & Air Conditioning to get a better understanding of whether to choose to repair or replace an existing AC unit.

“When there’s a problem with your cooling equipment, sometimes you don’t find out until there’s a breakdown, leaving you in the summer heat and scrambling to get it fixed,” says Rob.

Most cooling systems benefit from regular maintenance and the occasional repair to keep them functioning efficiently. However, when your AC is not functioning well you may be wondering if replacing it with a new unit is a better choice.

Getting More Life with Repairs

There are some instances when repairs just make more sense.

“If your system is under 10 years old, it is still under warranty, and you haven’t had many issues with it, a repair may be the most cost-effective solution,” explains Rob.

Minor issues are not uncommon for AC systems that are relatively new. However, if the problems are complex or require replacement of costly components, the repair bill can quickly start to add up. Keeping your system working smoothly with annual maintenance can help to reduce the likelihood of a newer system requiring costly repairs.

When is it Time for a Replacement AC Unit?

In some cases, the best route is to replace your AC unit with a new system. Here are a few clues that your system is causing more problems than it is worth:

  • Over a Decade Old: As air conditioners age, their efficiency drops, leading to higher energy bills and more frequent repairs. Consider an upgrade if your AC has officially reached its senior years.

  • Frequent Fixes: If your unit is constantly requiring repairs, it might be time to replace it. While a single breakdown might be fixable, a pattern of problems suggests it's time to consider a new system that won't leave you sweating in the summer heat.

  • Safety First: Your air conditioner should never compromise your safety. If your current system poses a safety hazard, like a carbon monoxide leak, replacing it is an absolute necessity.

  • High Energy Bills: Even with regular maintenance, an inefficient system can be a major drain on your wallet. Upgrading to a newer, energy-efficient model can save you money on your monthly energy bills in the long run.

“When in doubt, you can always use this common formula for deciding whether to repair or replace your system,” says Rob. “Take the age of your system and multiply it by the cost of repairs. If the repair cost is higher than $5000, it’s probably time to replace it.”

Whatever you decide to do, don't wait until the summer heat hits. The expert technicians at Oosterveld Heating & Air Conditioning can assess your current system, discuss your needs and budget, and recommend the best course of action. They also offer same or next day installation of a new AC system.
