Nick Bachinski, the owner of Nick’s Quick Delivery based in Fergus, Ontario, has been supplying fast, reliable delivery to the Golden Horseshoe area for 28 years. Nick’s is a customized courier, distinctly recognizable for their white vans, green lettering and dedication in operating above and beyond the expectations of the average delivery company.
“We are actually going door to door, picking up a product and delivering it,” says Bachinski. Other mainstream couriers will require extra fees or special accounts to provide this kind of service, but for Nick’s, it’s the definition of proper courtesy. With multiple options for delivery, “We try to promote the most economical way to [deliver] so it doesn’t cost the customer a lot of money and it doesn’t cost us a lot of money.”
The pandemic has changed delivery in a good way, says Bachinski.
The pandemic definitely led to modifications in how Nick’s Quick Delivery completed their deliveries, though it worked out for better, faster deliveries. Drivers no longer worry about signatures as Proof of Delivery (POD). Delivery can be more efficient by receiving either verbal confirmation or confirmation by email or text message.
“It gives drivers a little more of a safety net,” says Bachinski. With no direct contact, the driver’s responsibility is to contact the client and customer in advance, providing an ETA time to their location. The customer is then aware that the parcel is not sitting in the shipping and receiving department or on their front porch. “We’ve been very fortunate that all our drivers are vaxxed. We are doing our due diligence at this end.”
“We are an essential service as well,” says Bachinski. Prior to the pandemic, Nick’s Quick Delivery had many contracts with local pharmacies and hospitals. “What was new about [the pandemic] was the PCR tests. We were called upon to see if we could offer that service to keep everything moving in the community and keep everyone safe.” Nick’s would take the completed PCR tests and bring them to a central location for them to be analyzed.
It’s more than just getting from point A to B
“Out of the 28 years, last year was the only time we closed for one day. When the weather is bad we will let the client know their estimated arrival time when they call in based on road conditions and traffic. The first responsibility is my drivers, the second is the customers' products, and the third is our vehicles. It’s all important from start to finish. If the driver is safe, then the parcel is safe, and they can get from point A to B.”
“I still get up in the morning and it’s like going to the first day of school every time,” says Bachinski. “We provide the most effective and efficient way to help the individual no matter if they’re a small or large business. Their needs can be anything from a specialty item of sentimental value or a box of belts for a machine.”
Bachinski’s team continues to support multiple causes in the region, including local small businesses and the Centre Wellington Foodbank. This will also be their fifth year supporting Portage Elora with Pedal for Portage, a cycling (running or walking) fundraiser event that supports youth with addictions in the Elora area.
Nick’s Quick Delivery is a unique business, says Bachinski, “We all have a special niche and we all have a special service. “We’re the friendly courier that can do almost anything and it’s rewarding to know we helped someone either big or small, fulfill their need for that day or week.”
