Regardless of what you may think about climate change, reports from the current Government of Ontario indicate that it poses high risk to Ontario residents for multiple reasons, not the least of which is the weather.
That report, called the Provincial Climate Change Impact Assessment, suggests that there will be a rise in the number of days with extreme heat – that is, days where temperature measures 30 degrees and up --- affecting Ontario’s growing seasons, businesses, and most importantly, human health.
What does that mean to you and your family? If your household includes young infants, elderly parents, people with compromised breathing from asthma or COPD, or if you simply can’t stand the heat, then it means you need to be prepared to deal with high temperatures. That means taking a proactive approach to your air conditioning.
“In the winter when people are without heat, they’re somewhat annoyed,” said Mark Pooles, General Manager of Hy-Mark Home Comfort in Guelph. “When it’s the summer and people are hot and they want their air conditioning working, they are irate. People in Canada are less comfortable with the heat than they are with the cold.”
Given that the report suggest that southern, central, and eastern Ontario will average from 55 to 60 such extreme heat days by the 2080s, having an air conditioning system working at maximum efficiency is going to be a critical part of all residential HVAC systems. As for the summer of 2024, Pooles says now is the time to get your preventative maintenance and A/C check scheduled.
“People aren’t proactive, they’re reactionary, so when the heat wave does hit everybody’s waiting in line, clamouring to get their air conditioning installed or serviced,” said Pooles. “There are fewer deals available during peak season, so people often wind up with compromised systems. Be proactive and get it done ahead of time so you have no worries.”
For nearly a quarter century Hy-Mark Home Comfort has been a full-service mechanical company offering best-in-class workmanship in Guelph and surrounding area. For the last decade the company had placed a focus on new home construction, offering professional HVAC services to builders and developers with a minor focus on commercial and industrial services. According to Pooles, Hy-Mark is now refocusing its team on providing top notch HVAC retrofitting to residential customers.
“We are refocusing to get away from new home construction and becoming a more community-oriented company doing residential work in people’s homes,” he said. “Someone may have a furnace or air conditioning that needs repair or replacement. We will offer a new retro fit that’s more suitable, more innovative, and certainly more efficient. We’re going back to person to person relationships rather that focusing on builders.”
Th Hy-Mark team is well suited to the challenge. Poole said the company employs one of the largest groups of multi-licenced technicians, people with more than one licence for gas, refrigeration, and sheet metal work. He also said the company focus on personal customer service is reflected in the passion the Hy-Mark Home Comfort team has for the job.
“With the size of our team there is a lot of ability for us to be able to help people. I consider us to be in the service industry. We have high employee retention, which speaks to the culture and how we treat people inside and outside of the organization. The guys who work here enjoy what they’re doing and I think it shows.”
Given the fact that warm temperatures are already creeping in despite it being only March, Pooles said now is the time to call Hy-Mark to book you’re A/C service.
“Do it now. We have the opportunity now to offer deals. Typically the price of equipment is the price of equipment, but we’re looking to book work for the guys before the crunch comes.”
