How will you be celebrating World Animal Day this year?

If you are in Guelph and area, the answer is easy: on Saturday October 5, head on over to Harcourt Church, 87 Dean Avenue, Guelph and enjoy a full day of family-friendly activities, courtesy of One Thousand Trees and the Benjamin Project.

“World Animal Day is an International Day of Action for animal rights and welfare, celebrated annually on October 4, the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals,” explained One Thousand Trees founder Lisa Browning.

Browning continued to explain that she is passionate about the rights of animals and children, the empowerment of all, and making a difference in this world. “So, I decided it was important to have this special event and raise awareness about the rights of animals, as well as host a wonderful day of activities and learning for all ages, in conjunction with our partners, the Benjamin Project.”

The World Animal Day event in Guelph will feature five presentations on various topics, storytime for the children with stories focussed on animals, children’s crafts and activities with animal themes, and local vendors. Food, drink, and coffee will be available for purchase as well (cash only.)

“We have an incredible array of presenters for this special day,” exclaimed Browning. “Anne Porteous,of Sierra Acres Equine Assisted Learning Centre, will speak on horses’ innate sensitivity and intuition. David Rankine, who has spent four years studying the Two Bays Coyote Pack, will be talking about the behaviour and ways of this special pack.”

In addition,Browning added, Malcolm Bernstein, Founder and Executive Director of The Benjamin Project, will provide some information about the organization, and Katherine Leonard, Manager, Community Programs & Outreach, Guelph Humane Society, will talk about the Humane Society’s Youth Apprenticeship program.

Finally, Penny Burton of Brae Ridge Farm will talk about the world of Alpacas, their personalities, communication, behaviour, and their fiber.

“All of the speakers are absolutely outstanding, and these presentations will be informative, unique and fascinating,” said Browning. “We are thankful for their support, and for the support of those who are facilitating the storytime and children’s crafts and activities, as well.”
