Few businesses live to be 75 years old, a milestone that Guelph’s Original Home Furniture celebrated in May of last year.
Originally established in 1948, the then-named ‘Home Furniture’ business was purchased by Lynn and Darlene McClellan in 1989. After Lynn and Darlene recently retired, the store has continued to thrive under the new ownership of Jon and Emily Macklin.
Looking to grow and serve new customers, Original Home Furniture has added a Bedroom and Mattress Gallery to their business. The new showroom is located at the other end of the shopping plaza that the store is located in, on Woodlawn Road.

Jon and Emily wanted to create an experience for mattress-shoppers that was better than at a big-box store, providing “proper education and demonstration” so that customers could leave feeling confident in their purchase.
The store’s new showroom has the space to allow display of 40 mattresses, as well as base options such as platforms, motorized bases, and hi-low adjustable beds for individuals who have caregiving needs. Also on display are youth furniture and bunk beds, cabinet beds, and custom sofa beds.
Original Home Furniture store has established a process to assist their customers with making an informed purchase for their needs. It’s an interactive process, so that customers can learn and properly assess the mattress before they buy.
The store staff fit customers with a pillow that they can carry around and try with the mattresses. Pillows can be specifically designed for the way that a person sleeps, such as on their side or on their back.
Next, customers visit a station where they can determine if they prefer a firm, medium or soft mattress. They learn about the benefits from different foam mattresses, including coil and hybrids.
Beds with motorized bases are popular with customers who want to address circulation and breathing/snoring issues. There are also bases with heat and massage options, for individuals with pain and aches.
Another interactive experience that Original Home Furniture offers is a separate room that resembles a retirement apartment. Families are welcome to visit and try out the store’s adjustable hi-low beds in the privacy and comfort of the room, rather than being in the middle of a showroom.
The store has developed many loyal customers who have shopped with Original Home Furniture for years. With the high number of seniors in Guelph, Jon and Emily are grateful to be able to assist local residents with their sleep and comfort.
