Habitat for Humanity Guelph Wellington is bringing something truly exciting to our community this November—a three-day event that puts youth at the forefront of affordable housing solutions.

Running from November 6-8, 2024, at Elora's Grand River Raceway, the Hands On For Housing initiative isn't just another fundraiser. It's an inspiring blend of education, advocacy, and hands-on experience highlighting youth and skilled trades' essential role in addressing the housing crisis.

"Youth will be the most impacted by the future of housing, and they deserve a voice in shaping it. This event gives them that platform while also igniting a passion for the skilled trades—critical to addressing the housing crisis," said Karyn Boscariol, Director of Communications & Resource Development at Habitat for Humanity Guelph Wellington.

The initiative will gather more than 150 students from Wellington County for an unforgettable experience, teaching them to advocate for affordable housing and showing them the ropes of skilled trades. Over three days, these young people will participate in workshops and building projects and hear from guest speakers who share their dedication to creating real-world solutions for the housing shortage.

But it's not just about learning. It's about making an impact—everyone is invited to witness it. The event will culminate in a Showcase Celebration on November 8th, open to the public. Imagine a live auction where you can bid on backyard structures built by local students, or furniture that's been upcycled by Grade 12 interior design students. These youth-led creations not only raise funds for Habitat's affordable housing projects, but they're a testament to the power of skilled trades and creativity.

And that's just the beginning.

For instance, an all-women's team from 2nd Chance Employment Services, Anishnabeg Outreach, and Starling, along with leaders from Conestoga College's Women in Skilled Trades (WIST) program, will be working together to build one of the backyard structures for the auction. This team shows how vital women's participation is in the skilled trades while creating something unique with their hands.

Beyond the build projects, we'll also hear from Beyond Borders students, who have spent months surveying their peers to come up with bold recommendations for the future of housing. These young advocates will take the stage and share their findings with community members and local leaders. It's an opportunity to witness youth voices in action—helping to shape solutions to one of the most significant issues we face today: the housing crisis.

As Karyn pointed out, "It's a rare opportunity to witness their ideas come to life, and community support is critical to steer the affordable housing crisis in the right direction."

Habitat's event promises to be unlike anything we've seen before. It will provide an impactful, hands-on experience for youth while bringing together community organizations, businesses, and local families. It will be a celebration of creativity, hard work, and, most importantly, hope for the future of affordable housing.

Whether you're attending to cheer on the students, learn more about supporting affordable housing, or even bid on a handcrafted shed, this event is sure to be an inspiring experience for everyone. Plus, all funds raised will go directly to Habitat for Humanity's mission to build more affordable homes in our community.
