Guelph Dance, the local non-profit organization committed to showcasing Canadian contemporary dance and presenting a platform for artists to share their visions, is pleased to present No Woman’s Land.
A creation of Jaberi Dance Theatre, No Woman’s Land will show at the River Run Centre on March 18 at 8 pm.
This haunting, empowering show highlights the struggles and resistance of women in refugee camps. Guests are drawn into the story, are captivated by the dancers’ movements and ultimately feel a connection to the plot, which is based on real stories of adversity. No Woman’s Land’s impact is so strong, it has sold out shows in Toronto and earned five Dora Award nominations – including one for best original production.
No Woman’s Land is supported by research from Dr. Doris Rajan (IRIS-Institute for Research and Development on Inclusion and Society) and Dr. Shahrzad Mojab (University of Toronto), which further add to this production’s authenticity and appeal.
No Woman’s Land is enjoying rave reviews, including being hailed as a “poetic and urgent blending of dance and politics” by My Entertainment World. Batemen Reviews calls the performance “bold, graceful, elegant and an empowering aesthetic power,” and further notes “Layers of aesthetic purpose and urgency reveal a truly beautiful, disturbing and hauntingly empowering visual landscape.” Inside Looking In adds their praise, saying, “To watch these six performers on stage was magical and electrifying.”
Guelph Dance is pleased to help bring important productions such as No Woman’s Land to local audiences. The mission of Guelph Dance is to engage, support and connect. No Woman’s Land does all three, by engaging the community, connecting us with stories of women near and far and supporting the drive to reach across borders, physical and societal, to better understand the world at large.
Noting that “dance is for everyone,” Guelph Dance continues to deliver on the message and power that dance delivers, while helping to make artistic experiences more affordable and accessible for all.
