The newest addition to the ward in Guelph is here and it’s delivering on its promises: making incredible food with high-quality, local ingredients, bringing Italian flavours back, and connecting people.

Sugo Mercato opened in August 2024 and has been enthusiastically received. The establishment clearly fills a need in the market.

“The ward doesn’t have much in terms of takeout and, with its Italian roots, we needed to bring those flavours back,” says owner Alex Tami. “Even though our sister restaurant, Sugo on Surrey, is right down the road, we offer something more approachable and affordable at Mercato.”

Tami wanted to restore the ward to what it once was by offering a quick stop for a bite to eat and a chat with their friendly staff. He had been looking for a unique concept so he could introduce a bit of Sugo to another Guelph neighbourhood.

“Once we stumbled upon 60 Ontario Street, we knew the neighbourhood would accept a fresh takeout spot serving hearty dishes like pasta, soup, and sandwiches,” he says.

The next step was bringing in decadent desserts and offering spirits, wine, and beer. “Adding unique beverages, gelato, and homemade groceries was the icing on the proverbial cake,” says the owner.

On the menu and in the market

Chef James Stephenson and pastry chef Laura Tytler offer takeout sandwiches, pasta, and sweet baked goods—crave-worthy treats like cookies, bars, and Italian doughnuts. “Soon we’ll have soup for those especially cold days,” Tami says.

Their sandwiches are served on their own freshly made focaccia bread and they garner outstanding feedback.

“Sugo Mercato started as an Italian eatery but has put their spin on classic Italian-American dishes. You won’t find these sandwiches anywhere else!”

The market carries some essential grocery items like dairy, frozen meat, made-in-house gelato, and specialty drinks. They also have a bottle shop selling local beer, wine, and spirits.

There will be retail items for sale as well—small indulgences like soaps, pottery, candles, and charcuterie boards. It’s a great place to find a unique piece for your home or to give as a gift.
