Historic Niagara-on-the-Lake is a top destination year-round, but its charms are especially abundant in the fall. The orchards are full and the air is crisp. You can tour the vineyards, soak in the Victorian architecture, and enjoy dishes featuring locally sourced, seasonal produce.

You can’t beat the combination of high-end luxury accommodations, vibrant fall colours, and the laid-back, relaxing vibe of autumn days.

These two properties transcend typical getaway offerings and have distinct personalities. Let’s explore what these unique B&Bs have to offer.

Somerset Bed and Breakfast

This private, adults-only, luxury lakeside retreat caters to a distinguished clientele and redefines the bed and breakfast experience. It offers a relaxed, welcoming, and serene atmosphere—a peace that comes from being surrounded by beauty and nature.

The residence has been under the original ownership since 1989 and was completely renovated in 2022.

The B&B is on the shore of Lake Ontario, located at the mouth of the Niagara River. Its three spacious suites have private terraces and unobstructed views of Toronto, the U.S., and Lake Ontario.

The building was constructed on the original site of the Queen’s Royal Hotel. Built in 1868, it was one of the continent’s best of its time, hosting wealthy tourists from Canada, the U.S., and overseas.

The residence has elegant common areas for the guests’ enjoyment, as well as a spacious dining room where a gourmet breakfast is served.

Somerset is unique in its ability to host small groups and offers unparalleled privacy. It can provide tailored on-site experiences to make your trip memorable, such as wine-whiskey tastings, yoga retreats, brainstorming sessions, and small reunions.

Your host, Darren Byer, has an impressive hospitality background. He studied business administration at the University of Guelph and wine with the International Sommelier Guild. He has worked in the Niagara Region for 25 years and joined the Somerset family in March 2022. He is known for his great appreciation of food and wine.

Whatever brings you to Somerset—whether it’s a romantic weekend, anniversary, or cultural experience—Darren will take care of everything. He can arrange dinner reservations, Shaw tickets, a carriage ride, or a bike tour through the wineries.

“We are the only B&B on the lake,” says the Hospitality Manager. “All three rooms have unobstructed views of the United States, Toronto, and Lake Ontario, and our guest suites are among the largest and most luxurious in the region.”

The property’s best features include its location—right on the lake and two blocks from the city centre. The residence is beautifully decorated, with world-class art and lush foliage.

“Guests love the feeling of relaxation and stress reduction upon entering the house. They appreciate the exclusivity, the peace and quiet, gourmet breakfasts, location, and warm, genuine hospitality.”

The recent renovation enhanced the bespoke atmosphere. All suites have new, custom-designed furniture and carpeting. “Each year we add to, enhance, and replace to keep the house fresh and relevant,” he says.

Niagara-on-the-Lake offers plenty of activities. Darren says, “There are some of the best wineries and restaurants in Canada, but I also highlight the natural beauty, gardens, and walking/hiking trails throughout NOTL and the region.”

This gorgeous residence is nestled in the Niagara Parks Preserve between Willow Park and Fort George, across from the Niagara River.

Here, history meets luxury. The 200-year-old inn was completely renovated in 2024, boasting modern comforts while retaining its old-world charm.

The Manor, built in 1832, has a colourful history. It was owned by James Crooks, a Militia Captain in the War of 1812. After the war, he built this home as a Tavern and Inn.

Bertha Power, the House Manager at the Royal Manor, can help you plan a fine dining experience at a local winery, arrange tickets for a show, or share personalized recommendations.

“The Royal Manor Inn stands out due to its rich history and heritage as a 200-year-old inn, beautifully renovated to blend modern elegance with classic character. Unlike other high-end accommodations, our inn offers a serene atmosphere with lush gardens, a koi pond, and a picturesque patio, providing guests a peaceful retreat near local attractions.”

“Guests often rave about the peaceful ambiance and the attention to detail on our patio. I set up a coffee station there in the morning for those who like coffee before our 9 am breakfasts. They also rave about the ambiance in our comfy, eclectic parlour, and in our renovations. Many highlight the comfort of the beds and the beauty of the gardens. Some do yoga in the mornings out by the koi pond. The friendly, attentive service and delightful breakfast options start their day on a perfect note.”

Bertha says, “What I love most about the job is creating memorable experiences for guests. Seeing their smiles and hearing their stories of exploration and relaxation is incredibly rewarding. It’s fulfilling to maintain the inn’s rich heritage while adapting it for modern travellers. I enjoy entertaining, cooking, and gardening, so it’s a dream job for me.”

Recent renovations mean guests can enjoy beautifully updated rooms with plush furnishings and modern amenities. The common areas have been refreshed and are more comfortable than ever, including the stylish living room/parlour and cozy patio, ideal for socializing or enjoying a quiet moment with a book.

Her top recommendation for guests is the Shaw Theatre, a world-renowned venue nearby. “I also recommend a leisurely bike ride along the scenic trails that wind through the vineyards, waterfront, and Fort George. ZOOM bikes are great about dropping off and picking up bicycles for rent. It’s a wonderful way to experience Niagara-on-the-Lake’s natural beauty, with spots for wine tasting, a fruit market, a picnic, or taking in the views.”

Bertha says the Royal Manor Inn has a warm and inviting atmosphere, that the inn blends history with a tranquil, restorative vibe. “Our guests often describe it as a home away from home, where they can relax, recharge, and appreciate the beauty of their surroundings.”
