A police watchdog agency is investigating a report of sexual assault and serious injury said to have occurred while in the custody of Guelph police.

The incident allegedly occurred on Nov. 2.

According to a spokesperson for the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), a 34-year-old woman was arrested by Guelph police in relation to an assault investigation. She was taken into custody and held in a cell.

Later that night, she was taken to hospital and diagnosed with a “possible serious injury” and returned to police custody.

The woman’s injury “is not life-threatening,” the spokesperson said.

The SIU conducts criminal investigations into allegations involving police officers reported to involve serious injury, death and/or sexual assault. Its investigations can result in charges being laid against officers.

Provincial legislation prohibits local police forces from making public comments about matters under SIU investigation.
