The driver who hit and killed a 72-year-old pedestrian in the Shoppers Drug Mart parking lot on Eramosa Road last September has pleaded guilty.
Micaela Tsavaris was killed in the collision on Sept. 26 while walking to enter the store, after a 94-year-old driver was backing out of a disabled parking spot.
Her husband, 74-year-old Art Tsavaris, sustained minor injuries.
On Wednesday, the driver pleaded guilty to careless driving causing death at Guelph Provincial Offences Court, and was given a five-year licence suspension and a $3,000 fine.
The driver, now 95 years old, did not appear in court, though his attorney said he acknowledges his driving was careless and resulted in the death of Tsavaris, and that he has no intention of ever driving again.
The man, who was 94 at the time, was driving a black Chevrolet sedan when he backed out of a disabled parking spot and hit the victim, who was then dragged by the car, court heard Tuesday.
The penalty was collectively agreed on by the Tsavaris family and the accused.
