In Loving Memory of (Laura) Janice Wiseman July 31, 1935 – October 6, 2024

(Laura) Janice Wiseman (nee Fairbairn) left us on October 6, 2024, at Guelph Wellington Hospice. Having said goodbye to her beloved cat, Jack, several months earlier, it was clear to those of us who knew her well, it was clear she was ready to be at peace. Janice was born on July 31, 1935, in La Tuque, northern Quebec, and later moved with her family to Marathon on the north shore of Lake Superior. Her education brought her to Toronto for her final year of high school,at Branksome Hall after which she attended Bishop’s University in Lennoxville, Quebec, where she earned a B.A. in English & History.

While at Bishop’s, she was involved in writing, music, choir, acting as well as directing two plays, igniting her lifelong passion for theatre and the arts. This led her to Montréal where she met her former husband, Henry Wiseman. Together, they had two daughters, Catherine Wiseman-Hakes (grandchildren Andrew, Hannah, and Nicholas) and Suzanne Wiseman (grandchild Sam Wiseman). Janice was not only an integral part of the theatre community, but she was also a published playwright, author, a talented artist, and teacher. From the late 1970 to mid 80’s she was the writer-in-residence for the Guelph Children’s Theatre Company. Fiercely intelligent and well-read with strong opinions, she cherished stimulating conversation about books, the arts, politics and current events.

Her creativity knew no bounds, and her love of gardening—passed down from her mother, Evelyn Fairbairn—was one of her greatest joys, a passion she shared with her daughters. Her beautiful garden was a source of comfort and inspiration to all who visited. Janice deeply valued community, cherishing the friendships of Brian & Stacy (Valeriote Market), her neighbours Marc & Pam, and Wolfe & Iris, as well as enjoying regular trips to the Guelph Farmers Market, the library and the local museums and galleries. She was a true inspiration, leaving a lasting impact on everyone she met.

We are immensely grateful to Pam Valeriote (and her husband Roche), whose kindness, dedication and support allowed Janice to stay in her home in her final years. Pam’s friendship and caregiving brought immeasurable comfort and security, not only to Janice but also to Catherine and Suzanne. Pam made all the difference during this time. Donations be made to Guelph Wellington Hospice or The Guelph Humane Society in honour of Janice’s memory
